I began thinking of my husband's third great grandfather, Archibald McPhail. He was a captain in the Willie handcart company. He was a captain of 100. That number struck me this morning, reading again about these pioneers... Because Archibald McPhail left his 99 and went one night in search for the missing one. He found her on the other side of the frozen Yellow Creek in Wyoming (looks more like a river to this Arizona girl). She would not cross to him and so he crossed to her. He picked her up and carried her back across the ice. As he was crossing, the ice broke and he was soaked to the waist. He had died by 2 a.m... just three days from Salt Lake. He was 40 years old.
Do we sacrifice for the one? Do I?
I've also been thinking about an experience I had several years ago. I was visiting a ward and giving a genealogy presentation. It was a horrible week. Seriously, everything that could go wrong that week in regards to the presentation went wrong. Tons of "technical difficulties." The day of the presentation came and I was in a pretty bad mood. I couldn't figure out what the problem was. Sunday school came and it was this lesson - the handcart pioneers (which means this was about 8 years ago)... anyhow, during the lesson I had the strongest impression - this work (meaning genealogy work) was more important than that rescue of the handcart pioneers because this was the rescue of souls. No wonder the adversary had worked so hard against it.
